The unopposed motion to make York an anti-racist and inclusive city showed a real desire for change in York. However, to carry out this work effectively, it is crucial that the team tasked to create the strategy is led by people with lived experience of racism and discrimination.
For many decades, decisions and policies affecting our communities have been made without a fair representation of people of colour and other marginalised groups. This must change if we want to see a fair and equal society. This is what we are about.
The Working Group is an ethnically diverse and intersectional group of people. We have members representing the Afro-Caribbean community, LGBTQ+, Traveller, Gypsy and Roma community, Muslim community, and other marginalised groups.
We believe organisations have a crucial role to play in championing differences and solving disparities. Our commercial arm, Speak Up Diversity is working with and supporting businesses, local authorities and government agencies on their internal diversity, equity and fairness objectives.

Intersectionality and our Work
The work of Inclusive Equal Right UK is focused on the concept of intersectionality.
What does that mean?
We believe that to become a truly anti-racist and inclusive society, we must acknowledge and address discrimination in all its forms. They are linked, often overlapping and interdependent.
Our work looks at the issues of racism and discrimination through the lens of people of colour, as well the many other communities marginalised or disadvantaged in some way. These include those discriminated by race, disability or sexual orientation.
We believe working together brings unity and amplifies our voices. It is this ambition which led to the birth of Inclusive Equal Rights (IER UK).
